Eat Your Cream of Wheat!

I have been laughing this morning reading some tweets about cream of wheat. It seems that my favorite bible teacher is trying, without success, to get her daughter to eat cream of wheat after a horrendous case of the stomach flu. I have been cracking up at all the tweets going back and forth about it.
I decided on my long drive, taking the boys to school that we are a cinnamon roll culture and not a cream of wheat culture. We want what is sweet and sexy not healthy and filling. I am the same way, I want a Starbucks and pumpkin scone for breakfast even though Starbucks makes their oatmeal look pretty darn good.
We are what Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 3. “Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?”
We don’t want God’s Word, we want what makes us feel good and tastes good. We still want sweetened condensed milk and not solid food. It is time for us to grow up (put on our big girl panties) and feast on the meat of the Word of God. Why? Nothing else will help us sustain our faith in a culture of sweet and sexy.
Some of us who read this blog have been reading “A Praying Life” and I have been pondering on how almost every one of us said that we don’t pray with faith because we are scared to be disappointed by God. What is up with that? What is it about a whole generation of us who are scared to be disappointed by God. The One True God who promises that He will not disappoint, the only Thing that be counted on in this world and we are scared to trust Him???? I. don’t. get. it. I am the EXACT same way.
We have bought into a lie.
I have bought into a lie that surrounds me – that the big gooey cinnamon roll is better for us than our cream of wheat. James 4:3 tells us “when you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
I can honestly say that most of my disappointment with God has been because He didn’t give me the cinnamon roll I wanted for breakfast. When I have prayed for the things that bring him the most glory – He has more than fulfilled that prayer. Like time we prayed that God would move us to a place that we could shine His light into a dark world and God provided a house and a whole neighborhood to love on. He just MADE it happen – I didn’t have to lift a finger. He answered and He answered in a BIG WAY. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I can tell you this, God took that cream of wheat that I needed to eat and added some brown sugar and it tasted much more like a cinnamon roll only without all the consequences of a cinnamon roll. He is just THAT good!
